TRUSTe does not trust Google anymore

TRUSTeWhen you look at the TRUSTe list of trusted online companies you see Microsoft, Yahoo! but not Google. In 2005 TRUSTe ranked Google the number 11 Most Trusted Company for Privacy. What happened here? Just wondering. Leave a comment if you know.

I believe that Truste is an outdated concept. If you were to look at what information is gathered about customers in EVERY other channel – from store cameras, direct mail, to Claritas and other data, you’d see that in many ways the only thing that differentiates the online world from the offline one is that collection and processing is easier online. This being said – you can’t purchase trust. It needs to be earned. In fact, the very nature of using a Truste symbol probably tells those people who even know who Truste is (I suspect low awareness with general online population) is more of a red flag that the only reason a site has to use Truste is because in fact their nature is to not be trustworthy and they’d prefer to give you the false impression that they are.

People have a choice: live in a world bombarded by carpet bombing marketers – or leverage their own desires, behavior, and affinities to allow marketers to not waste your time or theirs. This creates efficiencies in our economy – helping it compete on a global stage.

Believe me, 98% of most marketers don’t have the infrastructure to really ‘track’ anyone the level suggested in 1984. Nor will they. Its not necessary. But some data can go a long way into improving a companies bottom line – thus allowing them to invest in other areas that adds jobs to our economy.

Truste lives in a 1980s world. Google lives in the world of today.
